As the first point of contact for guests at Grimm, our front of house team members act as ambassadors for our brand. Through efficient performance and exacting conscientiousness, our bar staff sets the stage for a memorable experience of beer appreciation and bonhomie. 

Candidates for the position of barback should display an innate sense of hustle, the ability to anticipate needs, a proactive attitude, and a perceptive awareness of people and the environment.

Barback essential duties:

  • Support bartenders in their duties by:
    • Collecting empty glasses from the bar top and tables;
    • Constantly filling, running, and emptying our high temp dishwashers;
    • Cleaning of all bar surfaces and equipment;
    • Organizing glassware on shelves, making sure each glass used for service is clean and smudge-free;
    • Ensuring that bartenders have clean towels;
    • Deploying candles to tables at sunset;
  • Maintain the efficiency of the taproom by:
    • Effectively changing and tapping kegs;
    • Troubleshooting draft issues as they arise;
    • Restocking bottled beers in low-boys when necessary;
    • Maintaining a clean taproom (bathrooms, floors, tables, and stools);
    • Immediately attending to broken glassware on the taproom floor;
    • Proactively cleaning the workspace behind the bar by wiping down all surfaces (shelves, bar top, etc);
    • Emptying backbar trash receptacles throughout service as needed;
    • Regularly checking bathrooms throughout service and restocking paper products when necessary;
  • Prepare the taproom before and after service by:
    • Assisting bartenders in opening and closing duties;
    • Setting up and breaking down tables, chairs, stools before and after service, leaving no undue extraneous work (and leaving no messes) for the next shift’s crew
    • Collecting and organizing all glass, paper, plastic, and metal recycling at the end of the night;
    • Organizing trash bags and recycling on the curb at the end of the night;
  • Be a knowledgeable and thoughtful member of the bar team by:
    • Understanding the history of the company, and relaying accurate and relevant information about our beers to the guest if they inquire;
    • Understanding each product on the taproom menu (beer, cider, wine, etc)
    • Constantly tasting products as they appear on our menu, and maintaining an up-to-date sensory knowledge of them;
    • Professional personal appearance: keeping good hygiene and grooming; and wearing clean, smart work clothes.

  • Must be punctual, self-motivated, and employ effective time management skills (in relation to shifts, staff meetings, special events)

  • Ability to problem-solve and work through challenges while remaining calm, flexible and upbeat
  • Keen awareness of the taproom environment and its shifting needs throughout service
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and nonverbal)
  • Ability to handle tense situations with coworkers and customers calmly and rationally
  • Fun, friendly, attitude with Grimm staff, management, and guests
  • Honest and professional demeanor
  • Curiosity and a desire to learn, never fearing to ask questions
  • Ability to continuously stand, walk, lift and handle 160 lb. half bbl kegs; frequently bend, reach, and push; and work in confined spaces and close quarters with others
  • Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, variable temperature brewery environment and to work within our 38ºF cold box.
  • Flexibility in both schedule and duties; willingness to work weekends and evenings
